Band shoot - the update

Group 35 shot in the previously mentioned location yesterday to gather more essential footage. The shoot was the most productive and successful of the project. We came together and shot the full song from at least 4 separate angles with very little problems, goofs or second takes. The location and the setup arranged proved very successful and aesthetically pleasing. We feel it appears very professional and gives more feeling and a real message to the video. Although all instruments were mimed very badly, we had fun and produced the best footage of the project.

Band shoot.

After reviewing our rough cut we decided that we needed more band footage to fill the gaps, the footage we already had of a band playing was not good enough because we didn't have a full band and we didn't have anyone singing the lyrics to the song. Martha came up with an idea that we could use a church's stage as a location and use the instruments they already have on site as props. Below is a diagram of the church.

Things to do over the weekend

So far we have all completed the questions to prepare ourselves for part one of the essay to do over the weekend.
Each of us now have to construct part one (1500 words)
On Monday when we give this in we will have this out of the way, and be ready to get some final filming and editing done before the half term week

Part 1

Introduction
Explain what task you did for the AS production and how this one differs from it.
(e.g. thriller/kids Tv)

For our AS media production we did a thriller opening sequence, three of us in the group did this together and think we got the most out of it, we all enjoyed producing it. However one of us was in a different group and she learnt a lot from this as she was left to edit it mostly herself. For our A2 media production, we had to make our own music video. We were given a selection of songs to choose from. We all decided on track 11 because this was the one we had the most ideas for as a group.

Part One
Explain briefly how the work came about and what the tasks were.
(Talk about learning more techniques for final Cut, analysing some real music videos and looking at student examples, talk from promo director, music range of choices, etc)

One of the first lessons we had for this project we went to the field and experimented with the camera, we looked at camera angles and how we could trick the eye of the viewer using perspective. We got this idea from researching optical illusions on the internet along with video which i saw in the summer.

Which band/artist did your group choose and why?
(give some positive reasons here)

The song we chose was called 'Beast' by Vincent Vincent and the Villains. We chose this song because we all thought this was catchy and addictive. We had many ideas for what we could do, and so

How did you ‘pitch’ for them?
(summarise briefly)

We posted this blog:
Initial ideas
-silhouette of man talking to woman, projected as the beast.
-Man and women arguing, man singing.
-both characters in masks which cover only half their face.
-'The rain pounding down on my window' (line of the song) shot of rain pouring down a window.
-locations will be a bedroom,
-Acoustic guitar, drums, Gloomy bedroom
-representation of a heart ripping
-using a beast as an emotional journey, Person go into a crowd of people with a white tee-shirt on, people in the crowd representing different things/ emotions. come out of the crowd with black ripped tee-shirt on.

Where did you get your ideas from? Cite actual examples as shown on your blog!

Other students work. and research on youtube.

What tasks had to be done in the research and planning phase? How were these handled and what could have been done to improve them?
(talk about storyboarding, animatic, organising places, props, equipment, people)

We started by making a rough story board, then after going on to make more of a presentable story board used for the animation on our blog, which we also used for planning. We all went to a fancy dress shop, to buy different props for the day of the shoot. we planned to go to one of the members of the groups house where there was room to expand on ideas and shoot some footage. we were not expecting to finish all the filming that day because we wanted to bring new fresh ideas to other parts of the song. We also did some test footage leading up to the day of filming, to get used to the cameras again.

How did the group come to decisions about approaches to the tasks to be completed? (what range of options did you consider and why did you opt for the choices you made?)

We decided to shoot at Marthas house, and had the idea of the couple arguing and one of them being a beast figure.

What roles did the various people in the group take on? Concentrate particularly on your role in the various activities.

Martha and Tom were acting in the film.
Jake did alot of the filming, whilst genny helped with the filming, she also organised the costumes.

Talk about any test footage you shot. What did you learn from doing these tests and from the animatic?

The test shots we did, we did not use because, although they work, and seemed to be very successful. And so we decided they did not have anything to do with the song.

However with the animation we evaluated that some of the shots worked, but others did not. Also Martha was the only person which new what the location looked like. And could visually think of places we could shoot.

Write about the shoot. What went well/badly? what could you have done differently?

On Friday, the group came to my house to get so of the shots we had thought about and tested for our final music video.
The footage we got was good, but we found we came to a bit of a dead end after the first verse. However we decided to get as much filming done as possible on Friday, load it onto our computer on monday and re-evaluate what it is we need to add to the final footage.
The footage we did get was as followed:
-First shot of two characters staring at each other, with camera circling them, in the dark and gloomy bedroom.
-The breaking of the heart on the tee shirt.
-The verbal fighting match between the couple.
-the rain pouring down on the window.
-And the band members playing on the instruments

This did go well however there are alot of loose ends that we did not tie up.

Consider your early editing and how you reached the rough cut stage. Outline this process and discuss decision-making you undertook.

When editting our raw footage we tried keeping

What does the group feel about the rough cut? What feedback have you had from director/ other students etc? what still needs to be done?

Our rough cut was still in quite a primitive stage, we are happy with the footage we are using but we still need to film a third more footage as we need to re-do one shot and also fill in the gaps. We made other students in our media class give us feedback on what we had to use there criticism to improve the overall quality of our music video, our main criticism was that there were gaps which we already knew was a problem before we showed it to them, one piece of criticism we were given that we didn't know about was that one of our member was in a shot that they were not meant to be in, the footage was poor anyway as the actor didn't emphasize to lyrics well enough we will be re-shooting soon.

MUSIC PRODUCTION CRITICAL EVALUATION: PART 1

MUSIC PRODUCTION CRITICAL EVALUATION

Part 1 should be about 1500 words in length and should consider the planning, shooting and editing to rough cut stage. You should make use of your blog as a reference point throughout! Where you refer to real examples for comparison, give web references and as much detail as possible e.g. artist/song and video director.

Rough Cut

Secondary shoot: The aftermath

After I went away and filmed a few extra (albeit highly improvised) shots to fill in some spaces in the video. Although we decided some was too confusing, some vital extra context was added to the protagonist's struggle against the "beast" inside him. It's still early days and we still have opportunities to be sneaky and film a few more shots with a personal camera. However we're confident the video is coming together.

Moodboard

Secondary shoot.

Due to, in our opinion, some substandard footage, some secondary footage will be shot personally by me later in the week, most likely tomorrow. The footage will be indirect to the video, but I will be featuring some good locations from around my area, as well as implementing some polished versions of my earlier ideas to help.

There's no way of telling at this point what the footage will look or feel like, how well it will fit in with the previously recoded footage. But I will try lots of different ideas and use plenty of locations in order to give us a chance of a better, more unique video.

First filming shoot

On Friday, the group came to my house to get so of the shots we had thought about and tested for our final music video.

Some of these sot we all though were a bit cleche, but others seemed to work really well. We are going to evaluate everything which we shot on monday in our lesson.

Test Shots

this are some first few ideas from an inspirational video we found on you tube.
this was filmed on Wednesday last week and i have edited it to the intro and outro of the beast song.
i think that it is very successful as an idea, but we are keen to explore other things too.

Vincent Vincent and the Villians bio.

Brand new, second hand.

They’ve got the name of a Hi-De-Hi show band, but pop-doo-wop’n’rollers Vincent Vincent And The Villains are avowedly not a Maplin’s holiday camp throwback. They tout energetic, catchy-as-hell music they consider “quite modern”, actually.

Some people have mistakenly dubbed Vincent Vincent And The Villains “rockabilly”. But Charlie Feathers, Gene Vincent or The Cramps, even, they aren’t. VV&TV meld Dexy’s Midnight Runners’ work ethic with Orange Juice catchiness, pop it in a pot with Lonnie Donegan skiffle, add a raggle-taggle pub singalong and kit the whole shebang out in natty secondhand threads.

And at a residential recording retreat in deepest Lincolnshire, this London fourpiece is defying the bleak midwinter, finishing off their spring-fresh, good-time debut LP for EMI. “It’s made using Pro-tools software,” says jaunty frontman Vincent Vincent – not some retro magnetic tape contraption then, as their very 50s visual shtick might have you believe.

Vincent is buzzing; he’s ants-in-his-pants excited about the album’s progress. “I’ve slogged years and years for this,” he pipes. “Never given up, and lived in the shittiest dives, like above a cellar in Bethnal Green where they smoked salmon. My room and my clothes stank.” His band’s confident stance is manifested in their sharp dress sense, both on and off-stage. Vincent says he maintains “very high standards of personal hygiene”, even on tour, when launderettes figure highly in the schedule. “But I never use an iron. I find the creases just fall out,” he adds.

VV&TV are very much a live band, although touring hasn’t yet taken them to Vince’s beloved Memphis, the musical mecca he once travelled to “on the proceeds of several car boot sales”. Although this juicy EMI deal could well mean more air miles soon. Whiling away any spare on-tour moments with a book, Vincent’s back is up if you ask for a favourite author or poet. He’s not a fan of literary affectation: “I hate that pretentious shit; when bands w**k on about Rimbaud when they’ve probably only read one poem… We’re a simple, sparse rock’n’roll band,” he continues. “Rock’n’roll is about fun, and not being po-faced about it all.”
